Our Commitment to Sustainable Farming

Certified by the Lodi Rules Organization....Ross Schmiedt, our founder, knew the importance of taking care of his resources, and because of that, our family's vineyard has been producing great wine grapes for more than 30 years!

The entire Twisted Roots Family is dedicated to the use of sustainable growing practices, and it is because of our "old" roots in the farming world! Being a Sustainable grower, we have a comprehensive set of practices that are environmentally sound, socially equitable and economically viable, that we follow when making any decision in the vineyard. While it our family's goal to grow and produce high quality grapes and wine, we are also committed to making sure that we do it while taking care of, and preserving each of valuable resources (land, water, people, etc...). Some of our practices include; conserving water and energy, maintaining healthy soil, protecting air and water quality, enhancing relations with employees and communities we live and work in, preserving local ecosystems and wildlife habitat, and improving the economic vitality of our vineyards. In short, we could not have a vineyard that is over 100 years old, if we didn't care about it, and the resources around it!

“When you drink a certified sustainably grown Lodi wine, you are supporting a farmer, a vintner, and a community that embraces its responsibility to take care of the environment.”

TWISTED ROOTS VINEYARD EXAMPLES OF BEING SUSTAINABLE & GREEN

Here you can the individual plants that we have inter-planted in our “1918 Old Vine Zinfadel” vineyard. These plants attract different types of “Good Bugs” which help us control the “Bad Bugs” without using chemicals….

Here you can see a wild turkey walking thru the vineyard… As Sustainable and Green growers, we believe in living with, and supporting all of the natural resources around us, including the wild life. They too have a purpose, and they too help us manage “pests” in the vineyard. Turkey’s are great at eating bugs!

In addition to living with the wild life around us, we take pride in helping them, by providing shelters, like this Owl Box, which we have all around the vineyard. Owls are critical to the vineyard health, as they enjoy snacking on goffers, which if not controlled, they will kill the vines.
