In 2005 Twisted Roots, the dream of Ross Schmiedt, came to life. After 30 plus years of growing great wine grapes for others, he decided to do it for himself. In late 2009 Ross was joined by his two news partners, Mike Hodge, and Josh Ruiz, and together they put their passion for great wine into every bottle of Twisted Roots Wine.

About Us Est. 1918Centered in the heart of the Lodi appellation, Twisted Roots Vineyard is the work of three generations of family members dedicated to the practice of growing great wine grapes following Sustainable Growing practices. While our family started the vineyard in 1918, it wasn't until recently that we began producing our own wines. The Twisted Roots Vineyard label started with a Petite Sirah in 2005 produced by Ross, in the basement of the original farm house on the vineyard. Mike (Brother-In-Law) and Josh (Nephew-In-Law) joined Ross in 2009 so that production could be expanded to include other varietals, and to develop our bsuiness relationship with Estate Crush. Even though our famous Petite Sirah we will always continue to be our flagship variety, we also offer Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Old Vine Zinfandel. Lodi boasts a classic Mediterranean climate consisting of warm days and cool evenings accented by a gentle maritime wind from the Sacramento River Delta. This delta breeze makes Lodi unique among other areas of the San Joaquin valley as the lower temperatures allow the ripening fruit to retain natural acidity.

Wine Making Here at Twisted Roots Vineyard we believe in letting the grapes speak for themselves. We feel that our work in the vineyard is where our wines get their flavor and overall complexity. As "Green Growers" we follow sustainable farming practices throughout the entire wine making process. From our attention to soil nutrient balance in the vineyard, to our barrel-fermentation, and small production each year, we feel as though we can produce a product that showcases the grape and the Lodi appellation.As a part of our philosophy of "let the fruit speak for it's self", we prefer to use "neutral" French Oak barrels to ferment and age some of our Red and White wines. By the time a barrel is about 5 years old, it is virtually "neutral" as far as its influence on the taste of the wine, and is used as a vessel for ageing without imparting flavors. This allows the grapes, either red or white, to express more of their natural flavors as you drink, instead of being over whelmed with oak tastes. As the wine goes through secondary fermentation in these neutral barrels, it takes on some of the very subtle oak flavors, which are a distant second to the grapes.
